Going overseas or wanting to travel long-term? Worried about how you’re going to make it happen, book flights, stay in touch with loved ones or find a place to stay? Well never fear! I’ve compiled a list of my favourite travel resources, which will be sure to make life easier.
CONNECT
REBTEL.COM not only offers cheap international calls, but FREE calls (using wi-fi or 3G internet) from smart phones with their free app for iPhone, android and windows phones. Simply sign up, download the app, then tell all your friends and family to do the same (remember IT”S FREE!) and et voila! You can stay in touch and never miss out on wishing your Mum happy birthday again (but you will have to field the inevitable “When are you coming home?” question…).
Don’t have a smart phone? Well never fear, there’s also Rebtel for PC where you can make PC to phone calls, as well as heavily discounted rates on calls made from mobiles or landlines.

It’s the bane of every back-packer and budget traveler, wanting a cheap place to stay without sharing it with an army of cockroaches or worse.
Thankfully, the budget travel arena has really opened up in the last year or so, particularly with the advent of some really good apartment rental sites like Wimdu. This site is fantastic because you can browse by location and price, and they have either rooms or entire apartments to suit most budgets.
Sykes cottages offer a wide range of private rentals throughout the UK. They have some beautiful locations from the English countryside to the highlands of Scotland, providing an authentic experience for less than the cost of a hotel. I’ll be heading to the UK after India, and will definitely be checking out some of their cute rental homes.
Want to save more money? Well why not have a look at these house sitting websites: Housecarers and Trusted Housesitters. The annual fees aren’t very much (US$45 – $60 annually) and if you’re really serious about saving money as well as experiencing the local cultures of some amazing countries throughout Asia, Australia, Europe and the Americas, then it’s well worth it for the weeks and sometimes months of free accommodation you’ll receive in return for looking after someone’s pets and home.
