I haven’t stayed in any hostels in Playa del Carmen, though many of my friends have. Obviously it’s the cheapest option, especially for solo travellers, although it is rarely the most comfortable. If you are not worried about getting any sleep and are happy to party all night and sleep all day, then most hostels in Playa will suffice. There are many and they can be booked through the usual suspects like ‘Hostelbookers’ and ‘Hostelworld’.
I’ve listed the following two hostels, however, for being ‘a cut above’ the regular grimy hostel.
So if you are traveling on a budget, want to meet other travelers but would also like a little style and comfort, you might like to consider them.
Rate: From $18 for a dorm bed
Now, this hostel looks like a small boutique hotel. Decorated in a ‘hindu style’ with wooden furniture and colourful textiles, it certainly looks better than any hostels I’ve ever stayed in. What’s more, it has a roof-top pool and bar area, as well as a reading room.
The only possible downside to this place is that it is located south of downtown in the leafy, gated community of Playacar. Playacar is an up-market suburb of Playa del Carmen. It has lovely beaches, a few stores and restaurants, but it is slightly away from the action of ‘el centro’. They do have bicycles for hire which will have you in town in 5 minutes, so if this isn’t a problem for you, I can recommend it as a high-quality, budget stay.

Located in the southern end of town, walking distance from the bus station and three blocks from the beach, this new hostel caught my eye for it’s stylish design. It is definitely a ‘boutique’ hostel, and though I haven’t stayed here I think it could be a good option for the more discerning backpacker as it has a lovely roof deck with a small pool.
Just a head’s up: I think they host a few parties on that rooftop, so if you are into that, great, otherwise you might like to book one of the budget hotels on the next page.
I’ve had some friends stay at the following hostels:
Address: Calle 6 between Avenida 20 and 25
Rate: From 180 Pesos ($15) for a dorm bed
I’ve had a few friends stay here, as it is well located (and very close to my favorite local restaurant!). It seems to have a good reputation and is pretty busy, although the dorm room I saw was pretty basic.
Address: On First Avenida (near the beach) and the corner of Calle 22

Rate: From 200 Pesos ($18) for a dorm bed
Again, I have had a friend stay here, and the night she did, there was music going all night. It may have been a one off, however, so I have still included it for it’s excellent location, one block from the beach and one block from Fifth avenue.
The dorms I saw were pretty small (which I like) and they also have private rooms. It has a nice leafy courtyard with tables and hammocks to hang out at.
