Our RTW Packing List

So what do  you pack for an Indefinite Travel Adventure? I have no idea, I’ve never been on one before. So why read on? Because I’ve made plenty of packing mistakes in my ten or more years of traveling on shorter journeys, and I am hell-bent on not repeating them this time. I have a rule, or rather a phrase that sets my mind at ease: They do have shops in other countries! That means if we forget something we … Keep reading…

Our RTW Travel (Un) Plans

world_600w

It’s nearly here. I can almost feel it. Warm, tropical air, spicy curries and exotic spiky fruits with strange names. Lychee. Jackfruit. Rambutan. Okay, maybe it’s just that last one that’s weird. Our Indefinite Travel Adventure (read, this is not a holiday) is just around the corner, starting in Southeast Asia, a part of the world that is so close, yet so far away. Close in distance, but a world away culturally. And I can’t wait. I’ve always loved Asia. From my first … Keep reading…

Self Indulgence 101

P1110804

As I exited a cinema last night, I over-heard someone describe the film we had seen as ‘self-indulgent.’ This phrase doesn’t sit well with me, though I’m not sure exactly why. Maybe I’m too self-indulgent to see it… The film was The Descendants, starring George Clooney. I liked it. Good story, great location (Hawaii), strong acting by the lead characters, particularly the two young girls that play his daughters, and an irreverent, off-beat script. It was long, and there were some weak spots, … Keep reading…

We Have A Date For Our RTW Adventure!

Today was a very special day. Yesterday, after conducting a monumental clean out of all our junk, paper work and other stuff not able to fit into a 40L backpack, we were mentally, emotionally and physically exhausted. The thing about chucking out stuff is, you have to sort through it in order to decide what needs to be kept and what needs to get chucked. And then there’s this annoying category entitled, “I know I don’t need it or have … Keep reading…

Sold! We Sold Our Home

SOLD

We sold our home today. It came as quite a shock. Let me explain… Just before Christmas, someone made an offer, a very low one. We made a counter offer, then they ‘upped’ theirs. Still too low. So we resolved to take the Christmas/ New Year period off from home-opens (i.e cleaning), and start again in the New Year when the buyers would surely come-a-lookin’. … Keep reading…

The Spirit of Spending

Christmas is a strange time of year. You either love it or you hate it. Either way, you still have to participate. Okay, that may not be true for everyone, but in my family, there is no option. Christmas just is.  I was feeling very un-Christmasy a couple of weeks ago, until I bought a few gifts, which strangely got me into the spirit. I even put up my little tree, and admire all ten little flashing bulbs every evening. … Keep reading…

Dealing with the C word

I’m talking about Change, people! Big, fat change, and the rollercoaster of emotion that has me strapped into its rickety carriage, hurtling towards destination Great Big Unknown, via a series of  oh-my-god-this-is-awesome highs, and some I-think-my-guts-is-in-my-mouth lows. I’m just as scared of change as you.  No, not you, professional traveller cum blogger-extraordinare cum citizen-of-the-world-slash-digital-nomad. You! Yes, you, who has inadvertently stumbled upon this blog after a bungled google search, whilst attempting to alleviate work place boredom. You, who is stuck at work, pretending to care … Keep reading…

Owning Less To Have More

A year ago we ‘owned’ two properties. Today, we own one. Soon we will own none. Yes, things have changed big time for us recently! Our apartment is on the market, and though I agonized over the decision to sell, now that it is up for sale, I am really looking forward to being mortgage free. I have written before about why we’re changing our lives to travel, as well as all the fear and insecurity involved with leaving our jobs, … Keep reading…

Before I Die I Want To ____________ .

Last night I had dinner with five of my girlfriends. Some I have known since I was 7 years old, others I met in high school when I was 12. Our lives have all taken different directions, and I don’t see them all the time, but when we do see each other, it’s like no time at all has passed. I laughed my ass off, and it felt great. … Keep reading…

Following Your Dream Is Hard Work

Thai island sunset

You could say Tyrhone and I are at a low point in our dream planning… I mean, we’re still trying to remain positive, thanks to the amazing adventure ahead of us (and at least a year of not working, yeeha!) but there is a hell of a lot of work to do before we actually get on that plane… Selling The House As I write this, rain is pelting down outside, which I have a great view of thanks to the crystal … Keep reading…
