Campeche is the capital of the state of the same name which neighbours the Yucatan, about a six hour drive from Playa del Carmen. We passed through on our road trip to Oaxaca for a night and I found it a charming town with a lovely colonial center.
We stayed at the Hotel El Navegante in the colourful centro historico which was US$50 for three people, including parking and continental breakfast. The room was clean and comfortable with tiled floors, A/C and cable TV.
It is situated within the old city wall (which has been restored) and a stroll from the main square. The square was beautifully lit up in the evening with some nice looking restaurants around it.
Campeche is lovely to walk around, especially in the cool of the evening. The coloured buildings and old city wall give it a quaint colonial feel.
