Best Part of Sihanoukville: Leaving
| February 26, 2012 | Filed under Cambodia |
Oh I am being a Negative Nelly aren’t I? But I guess that got your attention! Well there’s no point beating around the bush, Sihanoukville wasn’t my favourite place. It’s the most popular (in fact, the only!) beach resort town in Cambodia, and we wanted to see it for ourselves. I can’t believe I was bored in Kampot!!! Retrospectively, Kampot was amazing. That’s the thing about travel, your perspective on things is constantly changing. And maybe my perspective will change on Sihanoukville… more
Bored in Kampot
| February 22, 2012 | Filed under Cambodia |
I highly recommend getting bored in a place. Boredom is such a luxury. I can’t remember the last time I was bored, except at work. To be bored means you have time. And time was something I craved so desperately a few weeks ago, before we began our journey of indefinite travel. We were having a debate over breakfast the other morning as to when we actually arrived in Kampot. “Was it Wednesday? Or Thursday?” “Hang on, we got back… more
Crumbling Kampot (But What’s With The Pyjamas?)
| February 18, 2012 | Filed under Cambodia |
It’s raining today in Kampot, the crumbling river-side town on Cambodia’s south coast. After visiting on a day trip from Kep, we decided to come and stay here for a bit. At first glance, Kampot is dusty and run-down, but after a few hours it starts to grow on you. Of course its riverside location is a plus (why do we humans LOVE water so much?!), but for me, it’s the french-colonial crumbling facades complete with wooden shutters that conjure an image of a… more
Get Your Moto Runnin’ in Cambodia
| February 14, 2012 | Filed under Cambodia |
Get out on the highway! (or the back roads with the potholes…) Lookin’ for adventure… Or whatever comes our way! I may not be born to be wild, but today certainly was a great adventure. We set off from Kep with our rented ‘motos’ and headed for the town of Kampot, 25km west. It was a beautiful journey through local villages and farms, as the boys became acquainted with their ‘beasts’. I was able to take in all the wonderful… more
Paradise Found: Cambodia’s Koh Tonsay
| February 13, 2012 | Filed under Cambodia |
We were looking for relaxation, and we found it. After three days, two planes, one bus, a couple of tuk tuks and one wooden fishing boat, we found our own slice of paradise. Koh Tonsay means “Rabbit Island”, yet there were none to be seen as we alighted the boat at her sandy shores. There were however, several chickens, a few ducks, a couple of cats, and several dogs. After securing a simple thatched bungalow for $7 per night at the north end of the… more
Cambodia: A Warm Welcome
| February 7, 2012 | Filed under Cambodia |
I was officially welcomed to Cambodia before we had even taken off from Singapore airport. We hurriedly took our seats at 23D and E (I haven’t slowed down yet!), before Ms 23F presented her tiny frame at our row. It’s that awkward stage of the flight, when you know you are going to be wedged next to someone for a couple of hours. Do you strike up conversation? Do you maintain boundaries by keeping to yourself? I usually opt for a… more
The Journey To Somewhere
| February 1, 2012 | Filed under Follow Your Dreams |
I finished work last Thursday. I am no longer a flight attendant. I got some business cards printed for kicks (I know, soooo 1980) and labeled myself with the following words: Traveler. Writer. Dreamer. I mean, that pretty much sums me up right now. I am writing a blog aren’t I? I am traveling. And I’m certainly dreaming! I’ve always been afraid to call myself a writer. About a year ago, I went to the Perth Writer’s Festival, and met… more
Our RTW Packing List
| January 26, 2012 | Filed under Baby Steps- The Journey Begins, RTW Packing and Travel Gear |
So what do you pack for an Indefinite Travel Adventure? I have no idea, I’ve never been on one before. So why read on? Because I’ve made plenty of packing mistakes in my ten or more years of traveling on shorter journeys, and I am hell-bent on not repeating them this time. I have a rule, or rather a phrase that sets my mind at ease: They do have shops in other countries! That means if we forget something we… more
Our RTW Travel (Un) Plans
| January 22, 2012 | Filed under Baby Steps- The Journey Begins, Follow Your Dreams |
It’s nearly here. I can almost feel it. Warm, tropical air, spicy curries and exotic spiky fruits with strange names. Lychee. Jackfruit. Rambutan. Okay, maybe it’s just that last one that’s weird. Our Indefinite Travel Adventure (read, this is not a holiday) is just around the corner, starting in Southeast Asia, a part of the world that is so close, yet so far away. Close in distance, but a world away culturally. And I can’t wait. I’ve always loved Asia. From my first… more
Self Indulgence 101
| January 13, 2012 | Filed under Baby Steps- The Journey Begins, Personal Musings |
As I exited a cinema last night, I over-heard someone describe the film we had seen as ‘self-indulgent.’ This phrase doesn’t sit well with me, though I’m not sure exactly why. Maybe I’m too self-indulgent to see it… The film was The Descendants, starring George Clooney. I liked it. Good story, great location (Hawaii), strong acting by the lead characters, particularly the two young girls that play his daughters, and an irreverent, off-beat script. It was long, and there were some weak spots,… more
